Bamfield Is the Perfect Place to Visit If…
Bamfield isn't for everyone.
And we think that's one of the best things about it.
If your perfect holiday involves shopping, cafés on every corner, nightlife, reliable cell service, fast Wi-Fi and plenty of people around, there are many wonderful places on Vancouver Island to visit.
Bamfield probably isn't one of them.
But if you have ever said, “I just want to get away from it all,” then you might want to keep reading.
Because we really do mean away from it all.
You Want to Get Away From It All
There aren't rows of shops in Bamfield. There aren't traffic lights. There isn't a Starbucks. Your phone may stop working long before you arrive.
In winter, things become quieter still.
Bamfield has two small markets, one on either side of Bamfield Inlet, along with a small number of restaurants, a hardware store, marine store, gas station and health station.
We are also home to a Coast Guard base, the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre and the northern trailhead of the famous West Coast Trail.
But you don't come to Bamfield to go shopping.
You come here because there isn't much shopping.
You come here to slow down.
You Don't Mind a Little Adventure Getting Here
Part of visiting Bamfield is getting to Bamfield.
We are at the end of a former gravel logging road that was chipsealed a few years ago, making the journey much easier than it once was.
But don't mistake “paved” for “highway.”
This is still a working logging road.
It twists and turns through the forest. There are steep sections, cliffs, narrow areas and one-lane bridges. Logging trucks still use it.
And there are no street lights.
There are also long stretches without cell coverage.
For people accustomed to highways, city streets and having Google Maps available every second of the journey, the road can feel intimidating—particularly after dark.
That's why we strongly recommend making your first trip to Bamfield during daylight hours.
But there's another way of looking at that road.
You are going somewhere that still takes a little effort to reach.
There's something rather wonderful about that.
You Want to Be Daring
There is a moment on the journey when the towns and highways are behind you.
The cell signal disappears.
The forest gets bigger.
The road gets quieter.
And you realize you are actually going somewhere different.
Bamfield isn't a place you accidentally pass through on your way somewhere else.
We're at the end of the road.
You have to choose to come here.
And when you finally arrive, the reward is a tiny coastal community with a remarkable history, surrounded by wilderness and the Pacific Ocean.
You Want to Immerse Yourself in Nature
Nature isn't something you drive from Bamfield to see.
You're already in it.
The community sits on the wild west coast of Vancouver Island, surrounded by forest and ocean, with Pacific Rim National Park Reserve nearby.
There are beaches to explore, trails to walk and seemingly endless opportunities to simply stand somewhere and watch the ocean.
Winter brings its own personality.
It's quiet.
Really quiet.
There may be rain hammering against the windows and waves rolling in from the Pacific. Trails can become wet and extremely muddy. This is not the season for pristine white sneakers and a light jacket.
Bring waterproof boots.
Bring proper rain gear.
Bring layers.
Then go outside anyway.
You Don't Need to Be Entertained Every Minute
This might be the most important one.
Bamfield doesn't constantly ask for your attention.
You can make coffee and sit looking at the water.
Read a book.
Cook a meal together.
Walk a beach.
Watch a storm.
Play cards.
Spend an afternoon talking to people you came here with.
Go for a hike and come home muddy.
Or do absolutely nothing.
There isn't an endless list of attractions demanding that you hurry up because you've got another reservation at 2:30.
Sometimes the activity is simply being here.
You Want to Remember What Quiet Feels Like
At Argo's Landing, we sometimes have to explain what Bamfield doesn't have.
But perhaps we've been looking at that backwards.
No traffic?
Wonderful.
Few stores?
Bring what you need and forget about shopping for a few days.
Poor cell coverage?
Tell everyone you're going away.
No nightlife?
Cook dinner, pour something nice, sit together and listen to the storm outside.
Muddy trails?
Put on your boots.
A long, winding road to get here?
That's part of the adventure.
Because if you're looking for somewhere convenient, busy and predictable, there are easier places to visit.
But if you're looking for somewhere that feels genuinely removed from your everyday life, follow the road until you reach the end.
We'll be here.
